About Us
Medicine
Horse Ranch Retreat Center, located 90 minutes south of Tucson,
Arizona, was founded by Carol Roush and the Medicine Horse Herd in
2003. The property is situated within a unique riparian community along
the banks of the Turkey Creek Wash in the community of Canelo
(southwest of the bustling Sierra Vista/Fort Hauchuca communities and
southeast of the Sonoita-Elgin wine country). Saguaro, agave, prickly
pear and other species of cacti combined with cottonwood, sycamore,
mesquite, desert williow, black oak, and palo verde trees provide an
ideal habitat for hawks, owls, hummingbirds and woodpeckers. Medicine
Horse Ranch is surrounded by the Coronado National Forest, the rolling
Canelo Hills and Huachuca Mountains, creating a dramatic background for
workshops and reflective walks in the wash. The
artistic community of Patagonia is nearby, as well as the Arizona Trail
(for hiking), Parker Canyon Lake, and Arizona's newest State Park at
Kartchner Caverns.
Medicine Horse Ranch is an
Epona Approved Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning Center,
offering EFEL workshops and private instruction of the highest quality.
Carol Roush, LMT, Epona Advanced Facilitator: The rapidly growing field of Equine Facilitated Experiential Learning provides the perfect platform for Carol to combine a life-long love of horses with her highly developed intuitive gift in supporting human growth and healing. Carol owns and operates Medicine Horse Ranch south of Tucson, and she is also a senior faculty member and instructor in advanced programs at the Epona Center with Linda Kohanov.
"I feel it is an honor to be part of the process of horses helping humans reconnect to nature and to their authentic selves. The horses in the Medicine Horse Herd are masters of this magical work and they continue to teach us every day.
"I first came to this work after the sudden death of my husband. I was 44 years old and the life I had envisioned abruptly ended. Two years of struggle and grief brought me to my knees, and I realized that in order to resume a meaningful life I had to connect with something that was distinctly ME, something more than the fragments of "our life" that was no more. I instantly thought of Horse. It was during my turbulent childhood that I had fallen in love with horses; they soothed me then and they did again as a lost and grieving middle-aged woman.
"My first horse, Pharrah, found me a few months later. Pharrah led me to the Tao of Equus and then into the new and wonderfully fulfilling life we share at the ranch. Medicine Horse Ranch is truly an authentic community of people and animals seeking joyful connections with each other and nature. If you feel compelled to join us for a workshop or retreat, it will change your life."
